This is a wooden lacquered colored lacquer writing box.
Kinjyo is a technique in which a pattern is carved into the lacquered surface with a carving knife called a sword, the opening is filled with colored lacquer, and then the lacquer is ground flat. It is a type of lacquer inlay. The carvings include line carving and dot carving, and the swords include round and square swords. It is similar to chinkin in that it is carved into the lacquered surface and then inlaid, but the difference is that while chinkin carves all the patterns into lines and then pushes gold powder or gold leaf into the opening with cotton wool, kinjyo carves according to color and then grinds the colored lacquer flat with a spatula or brush.
