Chinese Song Dynasty Porcelain Cup
Circa 960-1279 AD
This porcelain cup is beautifully formed with a tall, slender body that tapers gracefully to a short stem foot with a flaring base. The piece is adorned with a delicate, pale glaze that emphasises its elegant shape and refined craftsmanship.
The Song dynasty, ruling China from 960 to 1279 AD, was founded by Emperor Taizu of Song, originally named Zhao Kuangyin, following the fall of the Tang dynasty. The dynasty is divided into two periods: the Northern Song (960-1127), with its capital in Bianjing (now Kaifeng), and the Southern Song (1127-1279), with its capital in Lin'an (now Hangzhou), following the Jurchen conquest of northern China. The Song dynasty is renowned for its advances in technology, economy, culture, and military, marking a high point in Chinese civilization.
