Beautiful Dogon Wood Carved Hogon ceremonial container.
This kind of ornamented container was used to hold food consumed during the enthronement ceremony of the Hogon, the political and spiritual leader in a Dogon village.
On the base is a figure of a horse. According to Dogon myth, the horse was the first animal present on earth. On the lid of the container there are 2 ancestor figures, depicting mythical protective beings.
The Dogon are an ethnic group indigenous to the central plateau region of Mali and in Burkina Faso, in West Africa. Hogon are the high priests of the cult of Lebe, the first Dogon ancestor to die, whose body was miraculously transformed into a snake after his death. The cult is associated with regeneration and renewal. The Hogon priest is charged with maintaining the earth’s fertility and ensuring the protection and well-being of Dogon society.
Condition: In good condition with a beautiful rich patina. Some age cracks. Please see photos as they are part of the description.
