The Igala are an ethnic group living in southeastern Nigeria at the confluence of the Niger and Benue rivers, numbering about 8 million. The historical Igala kingdom is now part of Kogi State, but today, the Igala people have spread from their original homeland to other major population centers.
This item is a typical helmet mask used by the Igala people, featuring flat faces, almond-shaped eyes, and a decorative, prominent crest. The lightweight wood is hollowed out inside. The helmet is adorned with both embossed and incised patterns. White, red, and blue paint highlight the mask’s numerous details. A plant fiber braid, attached with red fabric strips, encircles the bottom of the mask. Helmet masks are used in ceremonies related to the Egwu cult, which celebrates the spirits of the dead. The mask is meant to represent such a spirit, Egwu.
