Ancient Roman Silver Inlay with Goddess Tyche
Circa 2nd century AD
This fantastic silver inlay, oval-shaped with a bevelled edge, features a profile portrait of the goddess Tyche facing left, wearing a mural crown. Tyche, the goddess of fortune and prosperity, is depicted with fine facial features.
Tyche is the ancient Greek goddess of fortune, chance, and prosperity. She is often depicted as a youthful woman, sometimes holding a cornucopia, symbolising abundance, or a rudder, representing her control over fate and destiny. Tyche was believed to influence the success or failure of cities and individuals, and she was worshipped both privately and publicly. Her Roman counterpart is Fortuna, who shares many of the same attributes and associations. In art and coinage, Tyche is frequently portrayed wearing a mural crown, signifying her role as a protector of cities.
