Côtes de Nuits-Villages (occasionally Vin Fin de la Côte de Nuits) is an appellation mainly for Pinot Noir reds, with some Chardonnay. They are produced in a select group of five communes in the Côte de Nuits sub-region of Burgundy.
The appellation was created in July 1937. It currently includes about 160 hectares of Pinot Noir and 9ha of Chardonnay (395 and 22 acres).
The communes are Brochon, Fixin, Premeaux, Comblanchien and Corgoloin. The first two lie in the north of the Côte de Nuits, the last three in the south. Given this spread, the appellation might be seen as something of a gap filler – designed to cater for some high-quality, but rather scattered vineyards not already serviced by the communal appellations.
In fact, Fixin also has its own independent title. Brochon and Premeaux are additionally covered by the communal appellations of their immediate neighbors (Gevrey-Chambertin and Nuits-Saint-Georges respectively).
Comblanchien and Corgoloin are the two communes which do not have another title to fall back on. They occupy the territory between the northern end of the Côte de Beaune and the southern end of the Côte de Nuits.
