A charming Kyôto-ware lacquer suzuri’bako 硯箱 (writing box) of rectangular form with canted edges, depicting a landscape of a rock formation jutting out from the sea, with plants featuring curving trunks and branches nestled on the rock.
Rendered in hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer design) and takamaki-e 高蒔絵 (high-relief lacquer design) in various shades of gold, silver, and brown, accented with nashiji 梨子地 (sprinkled gold lacquer) on a glossy black lacquer substrate.
The interior is adorned with sparse silver nashiji and finished with silver fundame 粉溜地 (matt lacquer) rims.
The removable baseboard within the box is fitted with an inkstone 硯 (suzuri) and a golden metal waterdropper 水滴 (suiteki) of cylindrical shape, topped with a silver blossom. The set is complete with two lacquered brushes featuring a comma design.
Period: Japan – Taishô period (1912-1926).
Dimensions:
Height 4.8 cm, Length 24.3 cm, Width 21.7 cm.
Complete with original signed and sealed tomobako 供箱 (storage box) with a label, stating this writing box was made by a studio named ‘Minoya’ みの屋 in Kyôto.
In a very good original condition with minor traces of use at the points of the box. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.
When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
