Contemporary calf, gilt fillets on covers, dentelles inside covers, leading edges and spines gilt, title-pieces on spine (3 of 4 missing, one damaged), foot of spine of volume 2 missing, of volume 1 damaged, both top of spine damaged. Bindings good, content fine/very fine.
The expression Veteres scriptores de re militari was first used in 1487 to indicate the Roman military writers and, collecting togheter their works, to form a corpus of the military art of the Ancients; the use was maintained. until the 19th century. Works by Vegetius, Sextus Julius Frontinus, Claudius Aelianus, Polybius and others, on Roman warfare, strategy and tactics are included. Editors of this edition are the Dutch scholars Petrus Scriverius (Pieter Schrijver, 1576-1660) and Godescalcus Stewechius (1551-1586); the second volume contains Stewechius’ critical commentary. The commentary by Stewechius was first published in 1585 and an edition by Scriverius in 1606-7 (cfr. Richardot). The foreword of this edition is by Hugo Grotius. The printer, Andries van Hoogenhuysen (1628-1707) worked in several places, Rotterdam, Nijmegen, Amsterdam, and for some years (1667-1676) in Wesel (Duitsland).
