Third Edition of a Classic Work First Published in 1719 by Abbé Vertot

Complete in Three Volumes

This set is bound in full contemporary granite calf, featuring spines with decorated raised bands, gilded fleurons, and boxed designs. The mosaic morocco pieces indicate the title and volume number.

Condition: This is a beautiful copy, though it has some defects from use: there are tears and missing fragments on two headdresses, and the corners and edges are rubbed (with two corners drilled). The volumes are solid, with fresh interiors. The paper is yellowed with rare foxing. Overall, the condition is good.

After the great success of his earlier works, The History of the Revolutions of Portugal and Sweden, it was said that no finer pen existed in the kingdom for writing history, a sentiment shared by other historians like Bouhours and even Madame de Sévigné. Vertot then embarked on his favorite project: The History of the Roman Revolutions. Vertot added nothing new to existing writings and conducted no original research beyond compiling information. He conceived of Roman history as a great tragedy, a perspective common at the time, reflecting his passion for painting vivid stories.
