As farmers, the Lobi people dedicate a significant amount of time to their fields, where encounters with various snakes, such as the Bitis nasicornis viper and Boa Constrictor, are common. To protect themselves from the threats posed by these snakes, they fashioned iron serpent figures, which were either worn as personal adornments or placed on individual altars. In addition to larger examples like this specimen, likely used as an altar object, women also affix smaller, sinuous, flat-modeled snake images to their legs.
This stylized three-headed snake, coiled upon itself, is of an uncommon typology.
