Interesting, large six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) with a detailed genre painting depicting a buzzling impressive temple complex.
The artwork offers a glimpse into various facets of daily life during the Edo period. Numerous individuals are depicted engaging in different activities:
A large crowd gathering in front of a large bronze temple bell 梵鐘 (bonshô);
An aerial cableway between 2 mountain tops;
a parade following a festive cart;
and people visiting a temple standing onto rafters, possibly the well-known Kiyomizu-dera 清水寺, and much more.
Take a moment to explore the images and uncover the various portrayals for yourself.
The scenes are surrounded by distinctive silver- gold leaf clouds with a relief design of circles. The polychrome painting is set on a dark gold leaf background, and surrounded by two silk borders, a thin green one, and a wide navy blue one with a golden fan design. The screen is protected by a black lacquered wooden frame with its original hardware.
Period: Japan – Late Edo period (First half 19th century).
