Helena Wolfsohn after Meissen, Augustus Rex mark Double open salt with ring handle, colourful birds and insects - Salt cellar (1) - 瑪瑙, 瓷器, 鍍金
A 19th century porcelain open double salt with circular bowls and ring handle, decorated with vivid polychrome birds and insects and heightened with gilt.
Marked with the Meissen Augustus Rex mark.
Origin: Dresden, Germany
Maker: Helena Wolfsohn
Date: before 1883
Helena Wolfsohn was a successor of her father who run a porcelain business under the name L. Meyer & Söhne. She bought white porcelain mainly from the Meissen factory outside Dresden and decorated it in imitation of their oldest pieces by Johann Gregor Herold. She also drew on the paintings of Jean-Antoine Watteau, of courtship and romantic love in bucolic settings.
In 1879 the Meissen factory sued them for using the AR (Augustus Rex) mark. In 1881 the studio was forced to stop using the mark in Germany and in 1883 in England. The compensation for using the mark illegally was so high that the studio almost went bankrupt.
