It was first published in June 1979. The album was produced by Martin Hannett and released on Factory Records, an independent record label. The iconic album cover features a pulsar-like graphic designed by Bernard Sumner. The image was inspired by a diagram featured in the Cambridge Encyclopedia of Astronomy.
