Désiré Delcroix (1823–1887) Flemish playwright and novelist - Autograph signed letter to the Flemish poet Frans Jozef de Cort (1834 – 1878) - 1868

Autograph signed letter of the flemish poet, Désiré Delcroix, to his collegue Frans Jozef de Cort (1834–1878). Double page, 1 page written, dated Brussels 1868, about a meeting on Dezember 13th. Désiré Delcroix (12 September 1823 – 4 October 1887) was a Flemish playwright and novelist. As is the case for other writers of this period, his literary work was part of the Flemish Movement. Delcroix has won several state prizes for his stage work. Delcroix was a member of several Flemish fighting associations, such as the Vlaemsch Midden-Comiteit, founded in 1849 in Brussels, and the Vlaemsch Comiteit of France. Delcroix was also secretary of the Royal Theatre Company De Morgenstar in Brussels. From 1840 to 1849 Delcroix worked as a civil servant at the collector of the excise office in Ghent. He then worked for a while in Brussels as a teacher. From 1859 he worked again as a civil servant when he became bureau chief and then head of department of the Dutch department at the administration of arts, sciences and letters of the Ministry of the Interior. In that position, he played an important role in promoting Dutch-speaking culture in Belgium. By Royal Decree of 25 January 1864, Delcroix was appointed secretary of the Royal Spelling Commission by Minister Alphonse Vandenpeereboom to draw up unambiguous spelling rules for the Low German or Flemish language. The committee completed its work on 7 September 1864 and its decisions came into force at the end of that year for education in Flemish and for all administrative correspondence, laws and decrees and public documents drawn up or translated into Flemish. When the Royal Flemish Academy for Language and Literature was founded on 8 July 1886, Delcroix was appointed a member of the Academy by the government. He remained a member of the Academy until his death in 1887. #C 176 Provenance: From a hundred years old autograph collection. Age and origin is guaranteed
