This is a circa 1925 late Napoleon 111 damask table linen with red battens. These table linens, when first shown to the French public around 1870, became instantly popular and decked virtually every French breakfast- and dinner table. Subsequently other colour colours like yellow, green and particularly blue were introduced and added, but they never quite made it apart from the blue which has now become very sought after, but not sufficient were produced. After a while all of them disappeared into the large wedding armoires as other table linen came onto the market. They were in a way forgotten until very recently when there has been a resurgence with the ew generation who had never seen these colours before. They all have the small and wide battens in the colours, red, blue, green and yellow to highlight the table linen. These have the bladder red battens with cherries, which always has been a popular design. Being a Jacquard weave toy can also use the reverse side which have more vibrant colours. PLEASE NOTE: There has been a tiny repair in one corner and on the top are two small and "charming flower heads" embroidery instead of darning. These small holes were almost always caused by the French smoking during lunch or dinner and the hot ash not reaching the ash tray in time. It has however nothing to do with the fabric as it is in mint condition. Vintage linen have already known a first life and can therefore have slight traces of the past. We select the items in the best possible way, with love and dedication. Honest descriptions and images gives a real vision of the items. The linen that we offer for sale is not new linen, unless specifically mentioned, it is second-hand and old linen. As such it may have already been washed, used or even worn. In spite of the great care we take during the preparation, small imperfections can and may escape us. They do not in any way call into question the unique and rare character of these wonderful pieces. I present you our French Antique linen unwashed, as taken out of the armoire, unless otherwise described . It is all clean, but plan to give it a wash before use.
