Qur'an - Herat - Timurid - AD1460. A bi-folio manuscript from a Qur'an scribed shortly after Shah Rukh’s reign at a time of great political turmoil. It was relatively small for ease of carriage, thus was most likely for private use.
The leaf contains scripture from Chapter 2 of the Book, Al-Bagarah (The Cow), v.144-150, which orders the faithful to face Mecca in prayer, provides truths on the Prophet and orders the Prophet in turn to face the sacred Mosque. It has illuminated Juz in the margins marking the 145th and 150th verse respectively of the Chapter.
Each leaf contains 14 lines of evenly spaced and elegant Naskhi script in black ink and in an educated calligraphic hand. Multiple free-hand 'aya' in a simple gold spiral mark out the verses on the leaf. Diacritical advisory marks in red provide the reader with devotional guidance. The leaf is fully framed in gold and blue lines.
There is very little scuffing and fading around the marginals, so this is a good clean copy and very well preserved for its age dating from around the time of the fall of Constantinople to Islam in 1453.

I do understand your point regarding the cutting of it: sometimes the pages are so badly damaged around the edges that cutting the edges seems the sensible thing to do for mounting purposes.
