Northwest Africa 16180 (NWA 16180)
Purchased: 2022
Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L3-5)
History: Purchased in 2022 by Mustapha Oulkouch from Ali Naji in Guelmim, Morocco.
Physical characteristics: Single stone with dark brown fusion crust.
Petrography: (D. Sheikh, Cascadia) Sample is a genomict breccia comprised of chondrules (Av. ~700 μm) and mm-sized sub-angular clasts set within a fine-grained matrix. Multiple lithologies are present in this sample: 1) A Type 5 lithology containing equilibrated olivine/low-Ca pyroxene and secondary recrystallized feldspar (Av. ~25 μm), 2) A Type 4 lithology containing equilibrated olivine, unequilibrated low-Ca pyroxene, and devitrified glass, and 3) A Type 3 lithology containing unequilibrated olivine/low-Ca pyroxene. Accessory phases identified include Fe-Ni metal, troilite, and chromite.
Geochemistry: Type 3 Unequilibrated Olivine (Fa22.5±6.8, range Fa10.9-31.0, n=7), Type 4-5 Equilibrated Olivine (Fa25.2±0.3, range Fa24.3-25.8, n=33), Type 3-4 Unequilibrated Low-Ca Pyroxene (Fs9.4±5.8Wo0.9±0.8, range Fs3.4-22.5Wo0.3-3.0, n=16), Type 5 Equilibrated Low-Ca Pyroxene (Fs21.1±0.5Wo1.6±0.4, range Fs20.1-22.1Wo0.4-2.4, n=26).
