【Product details】
This rare Meiji-era set features Aristocratic Yusoku Maki-e roll tobacco boxes with matching trays, housed in their original wooden case. The collection exemplifies traditional Japanese lacquer artistry, with gold maki-e designs of Tang floral arabesques and phoenixes adorning the outer surfaces. Inner surfaces and undersides feature nashiji (pear skin) lacquer.
The tobacco boxes fit into the case's shelves, while the trays display matching maki-e patterns on all sides. The arabesque motif represents continuous growth and longevity, symbolizing the intertwining and unbroken nature of life. The phoenix is a legendary bird symbolizing rebirth, immortality, and the harmonious union of yin and yang. Together, these motifs are traditional auspicious symbols in Japanese culture, often associated with good fortune, nobility, and high status.
Yusoku Maki-e, a prestigious Japanese lacquer technique developed from the Edo to Meiji periods, involves layering lacquer with gold or silver powder to create vibrant, enduring decorative effects. Favored by aristocracy and samurai, this art form produces intricate designs by sprinkling precious metal powders onto wet lacquer. A related technique, Nashiji, uses gold or silver flecks to achieve a pear skin-like texture, offering a unique shimmer and depth.
Please note that the tobacco box lids exhibit minor chipping of the lacquer, and the set shows signs of aging, including scratches, discoloration, wear, and some dirt. The inner nashiji design has a slightly rough texture to the touch. Kindly review the photos to assess the detailed condition.
