Miklós Wesselényi was an important figure in the public life of Sălaj County, he founded a cultural society for the purpose of Hungarianization, which bore his name. On 25 September 1869 he married Ágnes Bánffy of Losonczi Bonchidan (1848–1925). At that time he became the best-known sportsman of Transylvania and president of the Transylvanian pack hunting society. On the basis of the census (by perpetual right) he became a member of the Hungarian House of Order. In October 1888 Franz Joseph appointed him High Sheriff of Sălaj County. In 1898 the king recognized his activities with the Knight's Cross of the Order of Leopold and in 1902 with the Order of the Iron Crown II class. From 1899 he was vice-president of the Transylvanian Museum Association. In 1907, on the fortieth anniversary of Franz Joseph's coronation, the king appointed him privy councilor. He died in 1916 in Cluj-Napoca
