Large Plaster Bust - 65 cm tall - The Madonna of Bruges - Late 19th Century.
The bust is in good antique condition, with some small marks and discolouration. See photos for a clear picture of the condition, as they provide the main part of the description for this impressive bust.
The original, full length, marble statue dates from 1501–1505. It is located in Belgium, Bruges, Church of Our Lady.
The statue of the Virgin and Child known as the Bruges Madonna was the only one sculptural work by Michelangelo, which left Italy during the artist’s lifetime. The carved marble sculpture was purchased by Jean and Alexandre Mouscron, merchants of Bruges, for the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Bruges. Michelangelo conceived the composition taking the intended position of the sculpture in the church into account. See last photo added, for reference.
Provenance: From the estate of Dutch artist Clemens Merkelbach of Enkhuizen (1937 - 2023).
