Rare English edition of this original antique map (etching, created by Abraham de Putter)) of the Island of Malta , representing a contemporary view of the island, but also illustrating St. Paul's shipwreck in the year 60 AD (Nr.2 on the map). Elaborate legend with 33 locations. Nr. 13 on the legend marks the city of Valletta with
"Fort Saint Elmo" (Nr. 14 ). The fort was built by the Knights Hospitaller (Order of Saint John) in 1552.
Size of the illustrated area: 42,7 cm x 31, 3 cm (incl. title) - (17,4 x 12,77 inch)- very good margins (with a few hardly visible very faint brownish stains- see photo). Size of the whole leaf: 49, 3 x 48cm (20,1 x 19,6 inch). Original folding marks ( these flattened and hardly visible) and very few very fine unobtrusive crease marks. Date of 1729 and name of the cartographer Abraham de Putter is printed outside the map on the margins (left corner). Very good condition, strong paper quality and clear imprint. Blank verso.
While the Dutch edition can occasionally be found, the edition with the English title and text is hardly on the market and rare.
