Pilot Custom 742 fountain pen, made of black acrylic resin.

The Custom 742 is a higher-end model than the Custom 74. It has a larger nib, body, and gold ring. Its larger #10 nib is more flexible due to its size, providing a relaxed, supple, and comfortable writing experience. The larger body gives a sense of heft and presence. The larger gold ring features two stars, clearly indicating that it is an upgrade over the Custom 74, which has only one star.

As the highest variation of the 74 series, there is the Custom 743, which has the largest nib, body, and gold ring with three stars. However, many people choose the 742 because the 743 is too large. It really comes down to personal preference.
