A fine Luristan cast bronze short-sword, featuring a triangular blade that tapers regularly to a point with a subtly raised midrib. The cross-guard is formed of two outwards-curving ridges with rounded terminals. The ridges descend and conjoin to form a cylindrical hilt decorated with encircling grooves, creating a bead-like grip. The pommel presents a similar design as the guard. A beautiful green-blue patina and some earthly encrustations to the surface. Some chipping and surface pitting to the sword as consistent with its age.
Luristan bronze comes from the province of Lorestan, renowned in antiquity for its sophisticated metal working techniques. In ancient times a number of nomadic populations, such as the Medes and the Kassites, settled in the area. Due to the nomadic nature of the tribes, none of the Luristan bronzes were of great size, since it was required for them to be light and portable. Excavated items often included weapons, tools, and finials, as well as small amulets and fittings. Everyday objects are also found including pins and bracelets. Archaeological evidence suggests that the Luristan bronze objects often serve ceremonial functions given their funerary contexts.
