A fine Luristan bronze sword featuring a stone pommel. The blade is triangular in shape, tapering regularly from a rectangular guard to a point. A flat, raised midrib runs down the centre. A cylindrical hilt, adorned with a spiralling ridge, leads to a rounded pommel, hemispherical in shape and formed from grey stone. Green patination and earthy encrustations feature to the surface. Some chips and wear to the edges of the blade and to the pommel. The blade has been repaired and displays a horizontal crack.
Luristan bronze comes from the province of Lorestan, renowned in antiquity for its sophisticated metal working techniques. In ancient times a number of nomadic populations, such as the Medes and the Kassites, settled in the area. Due to the nomadic nature of the tribes, none of the Luristan bronzes were of great size, since it was required for them to be light and portable. Excavated items often included weapons, tools, and finials, as well as small amulets and fittings. Everyday objects are also found including pins and bracelets. Their artwork mainly comprises ornaments, vessels and weapons. Archaeological evidence suggests that the Luristan bronze objects often serve ceremonial functions given their funerary contexts.
