Large Byzantine processional staff end/ finial showing the Archangel St Michael in a single piece of open worked bronze.
He stands wearing a long robe, his feathered wings splayed outwards, holding a spear in his right hand and in the other hand a globe symbolizing the Orbis Mundi.
On both sides there are remains of tinning which gave the staff finial a shiny silver appearance in the time it was used in ceremonies and processions.
This is an extremely rare Medieval artefact.
In medieval times St Michael was known as protector and guardian, the leader of the angels in the battle against the devil and his followers.
Height: ± 16,5 cm
Width: ± 17,7 cm
Weight: ± 657 g
Condition: Heavy and solid bronze with visible signs of wear and breaks, consistent with age and use. See images.
The wooden display stand, shown on the picture is included in the sale.
