The Hindu and Mahometan Periods", 1857 fourth one volume edition of this compelling survey of Indian history by Mountstuart Elphinstone 1779-1859, a Scottish statesman and historian associated with the government of British India. He was a noted administrator, becoming Lieutenant Governor of Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1819 where he is credited with promoting popular education and the local administration of laws; opening several educational institutions accessible to the Indian population. He twice refused appointment as Governor-General of India, famously preferring to complete this History instead, first published in 1841 in two volumes.
Book in very good condition, inside clean and complete, Externally original boards with new spine, light wear around edges and corners, shelfwear,pencil annotations on rear free endpapers. Very few copies selling worldwide. SCARCE.
