Twin are highly revered by the Yoruba people and to ensure that the good fortune that twins are believed to bring into their families small wooden figurines are carved to” replace “ them when the twins die. The Yorubas have one of the highest recorded twins births rates and coupled with a high rate of infant mortality especially in sub Saharan countries means that Ere ibejis are one of the most numerous of carvings from the Yorubas and indeed Africa.
The figures are kept by the families who care for them and sometimes adorn them with beads and metal ornaments
This example has a hairdo that is joined at the top to form a loop, Judging from the scarification and amulet on the figure it is likely from the Oye region of Yorubaland
It has an overall patina of camwood and blue pigment on the head and scarification and adorned with glass beads..
