This exquisite 20th-century hand carved wooden statue depicts Dainichi Nyorai, also known as Vairocana Buddha or the Cosmic Buddha, a central figure in Esoteric Buddhism. The statue's surface is adorned with gold powder mixed with lacquer, a technique that gives it a rich, warm luster.

The Buddha is seated in a meditative pose on an octagonal lotus throne, symbolizing purity and enlightenment. The figure's serene expression and traditional iconography, including the ornate crown and hand gestures (mudras), are expertly rendered. A striking feature is the beautifully crafted openwork halo behind the Buddha, representing the radiance of enlightenment.

Dainichi Nyorai, meaning "Great Sun Buddha," is considered the primordial Buddha in esoteric traditions. He embodies the concept of the cosmic truth and universal enlightenment, from which all other Buddhas emanate. In esoteric Buddhism, Dainichi Nyorai represents the cosmic consciousness and the universe itself.

The piece shows signs of age and use consistent with its vintage, including wear, patina, dust, and some discoloration, which add to its character. There is a crack in the base, and one lotus petal is chipped. The wooden bottom of the base shows some warping, with one side slightly lifted, causing the statue to rock.
