Two principalities in eastern Thuringia were named after the noble family of Reuss until 1918. The first representative of the House of Reuss, Erkenbert Lord of Weida, was first mentioned in a document in 1122. The bailiffs of Weida were ministerials near Mühlhausen in Thuringia until 1166. Around 1180 they became imperial ministerials. Emperor Henry VI made Henry II the bailiff of Quedlinburg. Henry II's grandson divided his lands between his three sons in 1244, who founded the Weida, Gera and Plauen lines.
