A remarkable patinated bronze kôro 香炉 (censer) modeled in the likeness of Fugen Bosatsu 普賢菩薩, the Bodhisattva of Practice and patron of women, riding sidesaddle on her elaborately adorned elephant.
Fugen is depicted in a relaxed pose, with one knee raised, her hand resting on it, and the other leg hanging leisurely as she holds a ruyi-scepter resting back on her shoulder. Her head is adorned with a modest crown, and she wears flowing robes decorated with ornate jewelry. Her serene face is crafted with heavy-lidded, downcast eyes, plump cheeks, and long-lobed ears.
The elephant is adorned with intricate jewelry and gear featuring dangling ornaments, and its saddlecloth is embossed with a mythical dragon motif set against a wave pattern. The elephant stands solidly on all fours, exuding an imposing presence with a raised trunk.
The bronze censer is cast form bronze and has a deep black patina. The figure of Fugen is easily removable from the mount, allowing incense to be placed inside.
Fugen Bosatsu, known as the "Great Conduct" Bodhisattva, emphasizes the importance of action and behavior alongside thought and meditation. She advocates for practicing the Buddhist precepts of charity, moral conduct, patience, and devotion, and is revered as the protector of all those who teach the Dharma (Buddhist Law).
