Duke Adolph of Nassau (1817-1905) Founder of the Duke of Nassau Order of Merit
This high decoration was awarded for special services. This is the Golden Knight's Cross. There are four classes of this order.
In 1839, Duke Adolph of Nassau assumed power over the Duchy of Nassau. The strictly conservative ruler maintained the outdated structure of his country. Only in the revolutionary year of 1848 did he have to briefly allow reforms. Duke Adolph of Nassau took the side of Austria in the German War of 1866, which led to the annexation of Nassau by Prussia. The duchy was incorporated into the province of Hesse-Nassau. As compensation, the Duke received the Biebrich and Weilburg castles and 8.5 million thalers in 1867.
The order's symbol is a white enameled cross with a gold border and gold ball tips. On the medallion there is the golden cipher A(DOLPH) on a white enamelled background, above which there is a golden imperial crown. The medallion ring is enamelled blue. There are two golden laurel branches here, which are finished at the bottom with the motto VIRTUTE.
