A stunning Indus Valley terracotta vessel, featuring vivid polychromatic decoration. The vessel is cylindrical in shape, sitting atop a flat circular base, with straight walls and a flat shoulder that tapers into a squat, splayed cylindrical neck and mouth. The main register of the vessel is decorated by four repeating scorpion motifs, rendered in vivid red and green, and outlined in black pigment. This motif is framed by a thick band of red pigment at the bottom, a thick band of green pigment at the top, and semicircles in both green and red. The shoulders also feature a geometric decoration of alternating triangular panels, with red pigment at the point and green pigment filling the rest of the panel, separated by two lines of black pigment. The lip itself is further adorned by black pigment. The base is worked, though elements of red and green do appear. Earthly encrustations to the surface and signs of wear as consistent with its age, such as minor chips and scratches on the body and rim of the vessel.
The Indus Valley Civilisation was situated on the Indus River and was one of three early and widespread cradles of civilisation along with Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. At its peak, the Indus Valley Civilisation, which included such sites as Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, may have had a population of over five million, who developed new techniques in pottery, seal carving, and metallurgy.
