This is the most beautiful puppet head I have ever come across. It had been acquired from a private collection by the late Ulrich Kortmann and then passed to me. Its expression, slightly saddened, does not directly refer to Indonesian woodcarvings, but has something classic and universal. It is made of very heavy and dense wood (weighs 2 800 g), painted black.It has goat's hair, two small antlers, and still retains one of the two brass earrings it originally had. Has a little crack going all down its left side and has a wooden functional moovable dowel pin at the neck..
Just as Kortmann had not mentioned anything about the time of its construction, so do I, though it appears to date from around 1970's . So, please, bid in accordance, focusing rather on the aesthetics.
Measures 41 x 24 x 14 cm.
Informations about function of these puppets and their role at the Si Gale Gale funeral customs can be easiy found at the net. In short they are connected with men who died without leaving a male heir.
