This five-tiered lacquer box is decorated with bamboo paintings and was made in the early 1900s (Meiji period).

"Bamboo designs" are a common motif in traditional Japanese patterns and art.

Bamboo paintings have also been used since ancient times as an auspicious pattern symbolizing strength and nobility. Bamboo is known for its flexibility, snow resistance, fast growth, and vitality, and its joints represent vitality, moderation, and purity. Bamboo embodies the strength to remain evergreen while enduring wind and snow, and represents strong vitality and a straight growth. Sparrows are thought to devour prosperity of descendants, bountiful harvests, and disasters, and are a symbol of "safety in the home." Bamboo, which spreads its roots widely and grows lush even in winter, is considered a symbol of prosperity of descendants, and it is said that the current form of kadomatsu was created when bamboo was added to it during the Muromachi period (1336-1573).

"Jubako" is a traditional Japanese box-shaped container for packing meals, designed to be stacked in several layers. The box is painted with black lacquer and decorated with fine gold patterns, giving it a delicate and elegant appearance.
