Miguel Ortiz Berrocal, born in Algaidas (Malaga), initially studied mathematics, chemistry, and architecture in Madrid before becoming a student of sculptor Angel Ferrant. He furthered his education at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts and took courses at the School of Arts and Crafts and the School of Graphic Arts. Berrocal's first solo exhibition was in Rome in 1958, and he won the first prize for sculpture at the Biennale des Jeunes de Paris in 1966. Renowned for his innovative interlocking sculptures, Berrocal established his own foundry and printing press, aiding many European artists. His works, drawing from classical, neo-classical, and modern art influences, connect him to contemporaries and influences like Henry Moore, Alexander Calder, Jean Arp, Isamu Noguchi, Pablo Serrano, Eduardo Chillida, Alberto Giacometti, Antoine Pevsner, Naum Gabo, Lynn Chadwick, Arnaldo Pomodoro, César Baldaccini, and Lucio Fontana.
