Jethro Tull – Thick As A Brick (Gerald's Immaculate World)
"Thick as a Brick" is an iconic album by British progressive rock band Jethro Tull, released in 1972.
It is often considered one of the band's most ambitious works and a masterpiece of progressive rock.
The album consists of a single, lengthy title track, lasting over 43 minutes, divided into two halves.
The idea for "Thick as a Brick" came from a satirical concept where the band parodied a fictional album by a fictional group called "Gerald Bostock's Great White Wonder".
The idea was to create an album that gave the impression of being an epic masterpiece, while at the same time poking fun at the smugness and pompousness of some prog rock releases of the time.
In fact, in the album's liner notes there was an extensive backstory about the album's supposed author, Gerald Bostock, an eight-year-old high school student.
Musically speaking, “Thick as a Brick” is extremely sophisticated and complex.
The composition consists of many different sections and themes that flow seamlessly into one another. Ian Anderson's signature vocal style and virtuoso flute playing technique are heard prominently throughout the album, and the band showcases their talent for complex arrangements and instrumentation.
The album received critical acclaim and achieved great commercial success.
It reached number 1 on the US charts and number 5 in the UK. Often considered one of the best prog rock albums of all time, "Thick as a Brick" remains a significant work in the history of rock music.
