Medieval to Post-medieval Bronze Cross Pendants (15)
Circa 16th-19th century AD
This nice group features fifteen unique bronze cross pendants from the medieval to post-medieval period. Each pendant showcases a distinct design, ranging from Latin to Orthodox crosses, highlighting the diverse artistic expressions. Some pendants are equipped with suspension loops for attachment.
The cross in Christianity is one of the most potent and universally recognised symbols of the faith. It represents the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, which is central to Christian beliefs about redemption and salvation. Cross pendants, often worn as a testament of faith, became prominent from the early centuries of Christianity. These pendants come in various designs, including the Latin cross, which has a longer vertical arm, and the Greek cross, with arms of equal length. During the medieval period, crosses evolved into more intricate forms, such as the Celtic cross, which incorporates a ring around the intersection, and the Orthodox cross, featuring additional horizontal bars. Cross pendants were not only symbols of faith but also served as protective amulets, believed to ward off evil and bring blessings. They were crafted from diverse materials such as gold, silver, bronze, and sometimes adorned with precious stones. The act of wearing a cross pendant is a visible expression of a Christian's commitment and connection to their faith.
