A miniature leaf from a much used Quran originating in the state of Bihar, India, circa 1425. It is written in a distinctive style of script called Bihari (after the State), characterised by wide, heavy and extended horizontal lines, and thin verticals. In this case there are 17 lines of fine script, with gold 'aya' marking the verses and red diacriticals providing devotional direction. The folio has a very fine 'Juz' marginal roundels in red, gold and blue marking a 10th verse division. It has not been possible to place what Chapter this belongs to.
Because Bihar is a warm and humid province, manuscripts from there, do not generally keep well. This bi-folio is remarkably fresh, although it does have some wormholing and a little thinning in the upper right section - see image 12f. This would be barely noticeable when framed.
