The Koulangos are a people living in Ivory Coast, numbering around 300,000. In the animistic religion of the Koulangos, statues are used to communicate with ancestors.
Koulango statues stylistically share similar features with those of the Baoulé and Lobi peoples. The statue depicting a female ancestor has short legs, a long neck, and arms that rest at navel height, holding an object. The head is proportionally large compared to the rest of the body.
The base color of the statue is black, but numerous details show traces of white kaolin paint and blue indigo paint. The kaolin paint has darkened and partially crumbled. There are no chipped pieces or cracks. The surface of the statue is beautifully patinated.
