【Product details】
This exceptional 4-piece set showcases the rich history and spiritual significance of Buddhist art from the Edo or Meiji period in Japan. The collection includes two small wooden statues housed in altar cabinets: one depicting Amitabha Buddha, the principal Buddha of the Western Paradise, and the other portraying Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, a symbol of wisdom and compassion in Esoteric Buddhism. The set also features two additional altar cabinets.
Amitabha Buddha, revered for his infinite lifespan and forty-eight vows to save all beings, promises salvation in his Pure Land to those who recite his name. The statue of Amitabha Buddha bears the marks of time, with missing hands and some damage to the halo, while the cabinet exhibits cracks that attest to its age.
Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, a guide of wisdom and kindness, supports Shakyamuni Buddha and embodies mercy in Esoteric Buddhism. This representation is believed to bestow longevity and health benefits upon devotees. The cabinet housing the Bodhisattva has sustained significant damage, including a missing door and roof.
The two additional altar cabinets, though empty, serve as a testament to the devotional practices of the Edo period. One of the cabinets has a detached metal fitting on one door, adding to its antique charm.
As with any artifacts of this age, the statues and cabinets display signs of wear, such as patina, scratches, discoloration, and other age-related deterioration. These imperfections only enhance the historical value and authenticity of the set. Please review the photos for detailed condition.
