Throughout history, coins were an ideal propaganda tool for Emperors and governments to present themselves and the message they wanted to communicate. They are an important symbol of power and are full of symbolism.

Silver pendant enclosing an authentic Roman coin. The sterling silver frame (marked 925) is custom-made to the coin and if desired can be removed without damaging the coin.

Coin: Hadrian (117-138 AD), Æ Sestertius.

Obverse: Laureate bust right.
Reverse: Annona standing left with grain ears and cornucopiae, modius left, prow right. ANNONA AVG in exergue.

Hadrian, Roman Emperor from 117-138 AD. He has been described as a 'benevolent dictator' and spent half of his reign abroad. In 122 AD he started the construction of a new wall that would 'separate the barbarians from the Romans' in Britain. Despite the massacre during the second Roman-Jewish war (132-135 AD) he is still considered to be one of the 5 Good Emperors. His reign saw relative peace and his focus was mostly on culture.

Annona: divine personification of the grain supply to the city of Rome and closely connected to the goddess Ceres.
The system supplying Rome with grain and food came to be known as the annona. The annona developed into a central feature of the relationship between the emperor and the capital's inhabitants, as is shown by the coins that were issued from the start of the imperial period onwards.
