Bernhard Hertz (1834–1909) was a distinguished Danish goldsmith who founded the Bernhard Hertz Guldvarefabrik in Copenhagen. Born into a well-to-do Jewish family, Hertz was the fourth of nine children. His father, Abraham Hertz, owned a tannery, which was later continued by Bernhard's younger brother, Meyer. Completing his goldsmith training in 1858, Hertz's graduation piece, an arm ring, was purchased by Frederick VII and gifted to Countess Danner. This significant piece is now displayed in the Danish Design Museum.

Using the proceeds from this sale, Hertz established his own business in 1858. He specialized in creating modern jewelry with flower motifs and replicas of ancient designs, leading the Skønvirke (Art Nouveau) movement in Denmark during the early 20th century. To make his jewelry accessible to a broader customer base, Hertz began producing replicas of contemporary jewelry in silver instead of gold and introduced machine power for rolling and frosting.

In 1887, he constructed a multi-storey factory in a courtyard in Store Kongensgade, Copenhagen. Bernhard Hertz passed away in 1909, but his legacy endured. His company, Bernhard Hertz A/S, was acquired by Lund Copenhagen in 1985. Hertz's former silver factory in Store Kongensgade was listed in the Danish national registry of protected buildings in 1989. This heritage listing includes both the factory and an older building from 1850, designed by C.O. Aagaard, which fronts the street.
