Late Roman to Early Byzantine bronze censer (incense burner) with original chains and hooks, suitable for hanging. This early incense burner could also be used standing (without the chains).
The rounded bowl rests on a ring foot. The everted rim has three suspension lugs, decorated with three pellets. which serve to strengthen the attachment of the circlets to the body.
Complete with three chains hanging from a central distribution hook.
There is a faintly undefined inscription in Greek below the rim: ☩ HAΓIA EAENH ☩
This can be a dedication to a Saint or the name of the individual who donated the censer to the church.
This bronze vessel was used for burning incense and could be suspended or carried around and swung by its chain.
