Ancient Roman Bronze Intaglio Ring with Clasped Hands - Dextrarum Iunctio
Circa 1st-2nd century AD
This great bronze ring features a slender band and a flat bezel featuring an oval-shaped red stone intaglio engraved with the clasped hands motif.
The clasped hands motif was known as the Dextrarum Iunctio in the Roman world. This motif, depicting two hands clasped together, conveyed themes of unity, partnership, and the forming of alliances. In Roman culture, the gesture represented the joining of right hands as a gesture of agreement, loyalty, or friendship.
