Ancient Roman Gold Ring with Portrait of Faustina II
Circa 2nd century AD
This charming gold ring features a thin hoop with a carinated profile that gradually expands to support a large bezel. The bezel, hammered out of the same piece as the ring, is engraved with the profile of a female head, facing right. The depiction includes a prominent nose, small lips, slightly pointed chin, rounded cheeks, and deep-set eyes, all under a finely coiffed hairstyle with the hair gathered into a back bun, possibly portraying Faustina II.
Faustina II, also known as Annia Galeria Faustina Minor, was a prominent Roman empress who lived from approximately 130 AD to 175 AD. She was the daughter of Emperor Antoninus Pius and Empress Faustina the Elder, and she became the wife of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, one of Rome's most respected rulers. Faustina II is renowned for her influential role in the Roman imperial family and her contributions to the social and political life of the empire.
