Philip Verheyen - Corporis humani anatomia. Anatomy of the Human Body - Jawbones - Liver - Kidneys - 1693
Antique engravings from "Corporis humani anatomia" (Anatomy of the Human Body) by Philip Verheyen, 1693.
Corporis humani anatomiae, published in 1693, was reprinted 21 times and became a textbook for students of many European universities. The illustrations were of lower quality (most likely he drew them himself) than in contemporary atlases written for anatomists. However, Verheyen's book was not only an atlas, but also a concise textbook that demonstrated to readers that the study of anatomy is an integral part of the study of physiology. It was written specifically for students and, according to the author's intention, it should be accessible. It remained a guide until the middle of the 18th century. The Falk Library has a second edition of Corporis humani anatomiae, published posthumously in 1710 at the request of Verheyen's widow.
