Original incunabulum woodcut leaf CXXIIII (124) from the Nuremberg Chronicle of Hartmann Schedel, the first Latin edition from 1493. An incunabulum (cradle print) is a book printed in Europe before 1 January 1501, when the printing press was still in its infancy, and of which the text is set in movable type. They are now rarely seen on the market. The Nuremberg Chronicle (Liber Chronicarum) by Hartmann Schedel is one of the most famous and best illustrated incunabula. The beautiful woodcuts were made by Michael Wohlgemut (1434/37-1519) and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff (1450-1494), a teacher of Albrecht Dürer. Dürer probably also contributed to the execution of many of the woodcuts for this incunabulum. The beautifully coloured woodcuts of Folio CXXIIII illustrate: 1. Maurice, along with Exuperius, Candidus, Victor, Innocentius, and 6,666 other soldiers, were martyred in Gaul under Emperor Maximian for refusing to renounce their Christian faith. 2. Vincent, a Spanish deacon, endured extreme tortures and starvation by the proconsul Dacianus before dying and being buried outside Valencia. 3. Agnes, a young Roman girl, was executed after refusing to renounce her faith or defile herself, her modesty miraculously protected in a brothel before her martyrdom. 4. Cyriacus, along with Largus, Smaragdus, and others, was tortured and beheaded under Emperor Maximian for his Christian faith, with his body later buried by Pope Marcellus. 5.Gervasius and Protasius, twin brothers from Milan, were martyred by being scourged and beheaded for refusing to worship idols. The verso side depicts different beautiful illustrations: 1. Georgius 2. Cristoferus is portrayed as a strong figure in flowing garments, carrying the Christ child on his shoulder, who blesses him. 3. Cosmo and Damian, depicted together, are dressed in medieval cloaks and headgear, with one holding an apothecary’s mortar and the other a urine bottle, symbolizing their roles as physicians. 4. Methodius is shown as a bishop holding a palm-branch of martyrdom 5. Marcus and Marcellianus; martys. 6. Maximus and Claudius; politicians. This is not a facsimile edition, but an original leaf printed in the 15th century - so 531 years old! Rare in coloured version. Dimensions: 42 x 29,5 cm Good condition.
