A remarkable, tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) displays a detailed Tosa School 土佐派 genre painting on gold leaf, vividly depicting the bustling festive activities of both commoners and the aristocracy during the Edo period.
The painting features scenes such as noble samurai watching a cockfight in a grand estate’s garden, devout individuals at a shrine dedicated to a white fox 狐 (kitsune), and street vendors peddling food and keepsakes. Individuals from various social classes are depicted enjoying the amenities of establishments, like offering views of wisteria 藤 (fuji), along with delights of food, tea, and music. A dramatic encounter unfolds on the left, where two groups of men, brandishing spears and swords, clash under banners displaying various family crests.
