The Peugeot 404 was officially unveiled in April 1960, at the Sochaux production centre, to hit the international market shortly afterwards. A line designed by Pininfarina, the 404 was a great success, with just under three million units sold and numerous victories, including in motorsport. In keeping with the tradition of the House of the Lion, the saloon was flanked by cabriolet (also with hard-top) and coupé versions, produced at the Pininfarina factory, but with mechanical parts assembled in Sochaux. The 404 introduced the new 1,618 cm³ carburettor-powered XC engine, which delivered a maximum output of 72 hp at 5,400 rpm. The Peugeot 404 was available in carburettor, injection and diesel engine versions. The introduction of the Hydrovac brake servo with drum brakes was groundbreaking.
