Here Southern Italy is still called Magna Graecia (Greater Greece). The Second Punic War put an end to the independence of the cities of Magna Graecia, which were annexed to the Roman Republic in 205 BC, on the bottom right are all the ancient authors referred to in the map such as: Pliny, Cicero, Plutarch, Catullus, Virgil, Titus Livius, Julius Caesar, Tacitus, Herodotus, Ptolemy etc...Map printed in Amsterdam by Johannes Janssonius as written on the bottom left, French edition as per text on the back, circa 1638-39. Title: Italiae Antiquae Nova Delinatio. Auctore Phil. Cluvero (A New Outline of Ancient Italy, by Philipp Clüver or Philippus Cluverius) and signed lower left "Amstelodami Apud Joannen Janssonium" (Amsterdam, at the home of Johannes Janssonius), from the book "Nouveau Theatre du Monde ou Nouvel Atlas..." Printed in Amsterdam by Jan Jansson or Johannes Janssonius and Henricus Hondius, 1638-39 circa. Sheet size: height 490 x width 606 mm (19.3 by 23.9 inches). Centre fold as published, original intact and wide margins. The hand coloured map is in very good condition, with beautiful colours, normal signs of aging, laid paper with chain lines.
Description: Beautiful original map of this remarkable atlas "Nouveau Theatre du Monde ou Nouvel Atlas...", competitor of that of Willem Blaeu, and published by Janssonius & Hondius based on the maps of Mercator, bringing together hundreds of double-page maps, divided by geographical regions and printed in different volumes. The "Nouveau Theatre du Monde" was published simultaneously in 1638-39 by Henricus Hondius and Johannes Janssonius, heirs of Jodocus Hondius, the owner of the atlas stock of the great cartographer Gerard Mercator. This map is well coloured, with two decorative cartouches, one at the bottom right with the citation of all the ancient authors used for the description and at the top right an allegory of Italy as a woman with gifts of the earth and symbols of power, the sea is crossed by five vessels and a sea monster, a precious baroque representation with splendid details and beautiful colours.
Author/Cartographer: Philipp Clüver also known as Philippus Cluverius or Philippi Cluverii (1580-1622) was an Early Modern German geographer and historian. Clüver was an antiquary, who was given a special appointment at Leiden as geographer and put in charge of the university's library, but his life's project, it developed, was a general study of the geography of Antiquity, based not only on classical literary sources, but – and this was his contribution – supplemented by wide travels and local inspections. He became virtually the founder of historical geography.
Author/Cartographer: Johannes Janssonius also known as Jan Jansson or Jan Janszoon (1588-1664) was a Dutch cartographer and publisher who lived and worked in Amsterdam in the 17th century. In 1623 Janssonius owned a bookstore in Frankfurt am Main, later also in Danzig, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Königsberg, Geneva and Lyon. He formed a partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius (1597-1651), and together they published atlases as Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius. Under the leadership of Janssonius the Hondius Atlas was steadily enlarged. Renamed Atlas Novus, it had three volumes in 1638, one fully dedicated to Italy. In 1646, a fourth volume came out with "English County Maps", a year after a similar issue by Joan Blaeu. Janssonius' maps are similar to those of Blaeu, and he is often accused of copying from his rival, but many of his maps predate those of Blaeu and/or covered different regions. By 1660, at which point the atlas bore the appropriate name "Atlas Major", there were 11 volumes, containing the work of about a hundred credited authors and engravers. It included a description of "most of the cities of the world" (Townatlas), of the waterworld (Atlas Maritimus in 33 maps), and of the Ancient World (60 maps). The eleventh volume was titled Atlas of the Heavens (a type of celestial cartography) by Andreas Cellarius. Editions were printed in Dutch, Latin, French, and a few times in German. After Janssonius's death, the publishing company was continued by his son-in law, Johannes van Waesbergen.
Author/Cartographer: Henricus Hondius II (1597-1651) was a Dutch engraver, cartographer, and publisher. He was born in Amsterdam, the son of the famous cartographer Jodocus Hondius who had started a map-making business in the city. Henricus obtained the original plates of the Mercator 1569 world map, and published a 1606 version of it. After his father died in 1612 Henricus co-ran the business with his brother-in-law. In 1621 opened his own company in his hometown. The first time his name was mentioned in an atlas was in 1623 when he published the fifth edition of the Mercator-Hondius atlas. After 1628 Henricus partnered with the cartographer Jan Janssonius and together they continued the business.
